As part of its city clean-up programme the 3rd annual FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN is proud to support the #CleanBlueLagoon Campaign that will take place this coming Saturday 21 September 2019 (International Coastal Clean-Up Day) at Ezemvelo Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve (North of the Umgeni River).

Started by locals, Luc Quevauvilliers and Dale Johnson, in March 2016, the #CleanBlueLagoon Campaign hosts a clean-up on every third Saturday of the month to coincide with the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Honorary Rangers Open Day at the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve.

“Our mission is to clean up the area and remove the litter,” says Dale Johnson, from the #CleanBlueLagoon Campaign.  “We are happy to have various organisations and corporate groups join us.  We rely on organisations like Wildlands to remove the rubbish bags for sorting and recycling.  We have an initiative called thankSALOT where we pay unemployed members of the community to help us.  This is funded through donations from members who cannot make the actual event or by our sponsors.”

“We enjoy expanding our family and creating more awareness around the problem,” continues Johnson.  “So having the support of an impressive event such as the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN really means a lot to us.  For us the most important factor is getting more volunteers to join our events.  I have lived in Durban since 1992 and while there are some other awesome cities I do not want to live anywhere else. In SA, Durban says good morning to the world first.”

Forming part of the International Coastal Clean-up, the #CleanBlueLagoon Campaign is open to the public.  Join Dale Johnson and his team at Ezemvelo Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve (North of the Umgeni River) between 08:00 – 11:00 on Saturday 21 September 2019.  Bags will be provided and volunteers are advised to wear closed shoes as well as a hat.  For further information be sure to join the #CleanBlueLagoon Facebook Group.

“We are proud to add the #CleanBlueLagoon Campaign to our annual FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN City Clean-Up Initiative,” says Agne du Plessis, Stillwater Sports:  General Manager Road Running.  “We will provide five staff to assist with logistics on the day.  We will also supply a gazebo for shade, bags and gloves (compliments of PETCO) and an ice bucket filled with ice cold refreshments (sponsored by Coca Cola) for volunteers.  Our cleaning company will collect the litter on the day for sorting and recycling.  In addition to this we will also host our own City Clean-Up on Saturday 12 October 2019 (the day before the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN).  We will meet at the Race Village (close to The Bike and Bean) at 07:00.  We’d like to encourage all Durbanites to join us on both occasions as we strive to keep Durban clean.”

The FNB Run Your City Series consists of three events:  the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN (5th anniversary in 2019), FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN (4th anniversary in 2019) and FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN (3rd anniversary in 2019).  Exhilarating mass participation road races, each event celebrates the splendour of its host city.  Runners (and walkers) will be treated to a journey that will highlight iconic landmarks and feature lively performances on route.

Over the short period of 5 years, the series has grown to over 40 000 runners in the three cities and has attained IAAF Bronze Label Status in two events.   The Durban race is now chasing Gold Label Status. The significance of that cannot be underestimated. Label Status means that the FNB Run Your City Series will attract some of the best athletes in the world, which means that South Africa’s top athletes get to race the best on home soil.  As a result fast times will be recorded on the African Continent.

Over the past 5 years the series has delivered compelling racing and fast times which will now be shared with the world through the process of a Livestream. The FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN will be livestreamed as was the Cape Town leg of the FNB Run Your City Series.
