A proud charity of the ABSA Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN, the staff from iThemba Lethu are following a strict fitness programme in an attempt to lose weight and get fit for the 2019 event.

Since 2001, iThemba Lethu has been a temporary place of safety for many abandoned and vulnerable children, providing a safe place of transition while the organisation works to reintegrate them back into their families or find them new forever families through the process of adoption. The HIV prevention programme works to equip the youth and leaders of tomorrow with life skills, leadership skills and education to help them make wise, hope-filled decisions for their lives.

According to Melissa Leslie, iThemba Lethu Co-ordinator, the fitness programme started a couple of months before the 2018 ABSA Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN and has continued ever since.  “Many staff complained that they felt overweight, sluggish and tired.  They wanted to get healthy.  It is not a formal programme, but instead a change in focus as a team.  Our staff started to manage their diets and exercise.   We believe that physical, mental and emotional wellness is linked and therefore it is vital to address all areas.  Participating in the ABSA Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN as a team is our main motivation.  A couple of ladies run regularly every week, while some of the guys have taken up running on a more serious level.”

“One of our staff members, Ndondo Ngcobo, has lost 25kg,” continues Leslie.  “We are extremely proud of Ndondo.  She has definitely encouraged others by showing them that anything is possible.  Her dedication has motivated me to get back into running.  We are excited and can’t wait to take part in the 2019 ABSA Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN.”

“I joined the fitness programme because I wanted to lose weight and regain my confidence,” says Ndondo Ngcobo, iThemba Lethu Parent Team Leader.  “By focussing on my goal and remaining constant and disciplined I managed to lose 25kg. I am extremely proud of my achievement.  The toughest part of the programme was to say disciplined, while people around me were unable to.  The best part was having a buddy to train with and of course seeing my weight go down.  Nothing can beat the ABSA Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN.  The atmosphere, the amazing people, the vibe and of course the route experience was amazing.  My goal is to beat last year’s finishing time of 01 hour 28 minutes 40 seconds.”
