Latest News

The Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K will boast one of the deepest ever assembled men’s fields over 10km in South Africa, with Uganda’s Isaac Kibet confirming that he is the latest athlete with a sub 28min 10km behind his name to make the journey to eThekweni on Sunday 10 July 2022.

“We are really excited about Isaac (Kibet) coming to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in 2022,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “Daniel Ebenyo coming to Cape Town, along with the legendary, Genzebe Dibaba, shows just how much of an impact the Series is beginning to have on the international circuit. With Isaac now coming to Durban the race is stacked with talented athletes (both in the men’s and women’s races) that are ready to #RunForDurban. We cannot wait to watch the race unfold on Sunday.”

Kibet is the latest in a long line of Ugandan athletes that are taking the road running scene by storm and challenging the traditional powerhouses of Kenya and Ethiopia. It was Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei in this very race in 2018 who set the SA All Comers Record of 27:16 and Kibet will have his eyes firmly set on that target. “I want to thank the race organisers for the invitation. I wanted to come here to run fast like other athletes did in the past. I have trained well, and I am ready to improve my 10k PB.” Kibet’s PB is a lightning fast 27:41 run in Lille, France on 6 November 2021 and makes him the fastest in the field. Kibet looking to improve on his 27:41 is a statement to take seriously after his 60:20 Half Marathon in March this year, also in Lille. That came a month after running 60:32 in Doha at the famous RAK Half Marathon.

Kibet in the last two years has come a long way, improving his 10km PB from 28:59 in 2019 to 28:01 in September 2021 (he did not race in 2020) and then down to 27:41 in November 2021. But possibly a greater indication of how dangerous and fast Kibet can be is the massive 4minute improvement in his Half Marathon performance from 2019 where he clocked 64:34 in Kampala. With no Half Marathons run from 2019 to 2022, his 60:32 at RAK in February this year and a month later 60:22 in Lille are clear signs that Kibet is in ominous form and will be tough to beat on race day.

Mokoka back in Durban:

Stephen Mokoka won the 2019 edition of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K and was narrowly edged by Precious Mashele in 2021. But the wily campaigner is back in 2022 and when Mokoka lines up at a race, you know that he doesn’t come unprepared. No longer the young speedster that he was when he set the SA Record of 27:38 in Manchester in 2015, Mokoka makes full use of the wealth of experience that he has. No longer will you see him driving the bus at the front end of the race in the faster 10km, but he will set himself a steady target and pace and stick to it, picking up the pieces. It is that tactic that saw him finish third in the 2021 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 12K, 6th in the 2022 edition, 5th at the Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon and set a new world record over 50km (2:40.13) in March.

“I will do my best as I always do,” said the 37-year-old National 10km and Half Marathon Record Holder. “I have struggled with ITB which is why I have withdrawn from the World Championships Marathon team. I was not able to put in the work. But that has allowed me to prepare better for Durban and I’m looking forward to racing in Durban again. With these top guys coming in from overseas and Africa we know it will be great racing and we can only benefit from that. I am looking forward to 10 July.”
